Structural Tree Pruning - Charles Hoey Park Oak Trees
An urban forest consulting service was retained by the City to complete an assessment of the four Northern Red Oak trees in Charles Hoey Park (south of the Train Station) that are estimated to be over 100 years old. This same firm completed a similar assessment in 2015. The 2023 assessment indicates these trees are overall in fair health, but they are aging and becoming increasingly prone to limb failure, particularly in severe weather. Given the location and potential risks associated with limb failure, the assessment strongly recommends extensive canopy pruning for 25 – 35% of the tree canopy, depending on which tree. This will be focused, targeted structural pruning that emphasized higher risk tree limb removal and overall canopy reduction. As this work cannot be avoided, the pruning is being scheduled for mid-late October. We all cherish these impressive trees and the upcoming structural pruning will extend their life a little bit further.
