Friendship Square Update

ree

The City of Duncan is pleased to announce that Friendship Square – Hiiye'yutul', at the corner of Station Street and Craig Street, is now open to serve Duncan residents and downtown shoppers, adding to the vibrancy of daily life and the lively summer event season in downtown Duncan.

A product of the Station Street Placemaking Project, Friendship Square – Hiiye'yutul' was shaped by community feedback to create a welcoming space for all. The name ‘Hiiye'yutul'’ means ‘be friendly with everyone’ in Hul’q’umi’num,’ reflecting the space’s inclusive spirit. This is reflected in many accessibility features of the park, including the accessible stage, tables, and seating areas, and accessible height drinking fountain. Shade canopies offer respite from the sun and rain, with all of this surrounded by native plantings.

“Friendship Square – Hiiye'yutul' is such a beautiful new gathering space right in the heart of downtown Duncan,” said Mayor Michelle Staples. “It’s a place where people can come together to relax, celebrate, share stories, and just enjoy being in community. It reflects the vibrant spirit of Duncan; our diverse cultures, creativity, and deep connections with one another. This is what building community looks like.”

The City is thankful for grant funding from the Government of B.C.’s Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program and the Island Coastal Economic Trust that made this project possible.

A community celebration will be held later this summer to officially open Friendship Square - Hiiye'yutul'. The new public washrooms will be opening next week.
