Spooktacular 2020: A Socially Distanced Story Walk, Online Costume Contest & Guessing Games

It is that spooky time of the year again! Halloween, normally an exciting time for children and parents to dress up for Spooktacular and partake in a costume contest in the City Square, will look different this year as COVID-19 regulations prevent the Downtown Duncan BIA from hosting our typical event in the City Square. Fear not – the festivities will carry on in a safe, socially distanced manner with an online costume contest and self-guided Story Walk!

Library partners with Downtown Duncan BIA for Storywalk®

The Vancouver Island Regional Library is thrilled to partner with The Downtown Duncan Business Improvement Area Society (DDBIA) to offer an exciting new socially distanced activity for children and families.

This month from October 24th to October 31st you can take part in a fun Halloween Storywalk®. Read the story Scary, Scary Halloween by Eve Buntin and Jan Brett displayed on boards in the windows of participating businesses, while you enjoy the downtown area. Businesses which will be displaying the Story Walk posters include Peacock Photos, Pemberton Holmes, Eclectic Avenue, Belongings, Martin’s Menswear, Ten Old Books, Monk Office, Wishes, Alley Cat Hair Design, Outlooks Menswear Duncan, John Hirst for SunLife Insurance, The Red Balloon Toyshop, Ironworks Café and Creperie, Hudson’s on First, ReFresh Cowichan Marketplace, Cardino Shoes, and Volume One Bookstore.

For more information about this event contact the Cowichan branch at cowichan@virl.bc.ca or the Downtown Duncan BIA at ddbia@downtownduncan.ca.

Online Costume Contest & Guessing Games

The DDBIA is hosting an online costume contest for the month of October. For the chance to win up to $100 Downtown Duncan Dollars (to spend on a Story Walk, for instance!) post a photo of yourself and/or your child on social media wearing your Halloween costume this year. Be sure to tag us on Facebook (@downtownduncan) or Instagram (@downtown.duncan) and make sure to include the hashtag #spooktacular2020!

Photos will be judged for first, second, and third place on the basis of originality, effort, and personality! Bonus points will be awarded for those who take pictures downtown and/or with a special souvenir of your experiences downtown. Submissions judged by the BIA's own marketing committee and the winners will be announced on November 4th and contacted via social media or email.

Last but not least, don't forget to take your best guess at the weight of the DDBIA's official Jack O' Lantern and the number of jelly beans in the jar, both on display at Greenhouse Café located at 177 Kenneth, unit #104.

Good Luck!
